Strange Beginnings...

My interest into midwifery began 20 years ago when I was on holiday and staying in a cottage within the grounds of a sheep farm. It was lambing season and the local farmer invited me to assist him in caring for his ewes in labour-I jumped at the chance and I was soon helping him at all hours of the day and night. I was “on call” for births, feeding some of the lambs and I was even cleaning out the barn. I was in awe of just how amazing labour and birth was and alas, this was the start of my midwifery journey! Although, I decided that I was going to become a midwife instead of a farmer!

I went on to study a BSc Midwifery at the University of Dundee in Scotland, UK and I feel privileged to have trained at such a great establishment as it is linked to excellent teaching hospitals and birth centres. Reflecting back on my training days as a student, until now, I have been blessed to meet many women from different social and cultural backgrounds, supporting them during times of joy and excitement and also in periods of hardship and anxiety. I have gained vast experience and I continue to learn every day. Working with women and their families at such an important time, is both an honour and a privilege, it is something truly special. Each birth that I attend, or woman that I support creates everlasting memories that will stay with me forever.

Pregnancy and Parenthood

I believe that pregnancy is one of the most special and life changing events that a person can experience. As a result, women and their families deserve to be nurtured, supported and to have someone who they can reach out to for reliable information and guidance.

Whilst working as a midwife in the Middle East, the need for consistent pregnancy support has become evident, particularly with women who do not have resident family members or close friends that they can call on for reassurance or information. This gap led to the creation of Simply Birth where I offer community based, individualised Doula support and information to women and their families during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Women should always be empowered to trust their instincts-my key role is to provide support by providing evidence-based information to aid them in making informed choices about their care, to achieve their desired birth outcomes and not those of anyone else.

Working as a Doula

Working as a part time Doula gives me the freedom to emotionally support women at home and in the community. This enables me to spend even more time being ‘with women’ building trusting relationships and doing what I love best; providing support and information about all thing’s pregnancy, birth and baby related!
